The Amazing Calendula

The Amazing Calendula

The skin is the largest organ in the body and it absorbs up to 80% of anything we put on it. According to scientists it takes less than 30 seconds for chemicals in your personal care products to be absorbed into your skin. Our approach to making natural personal care products is based on our personal philosophy that if we wouldn't put something IN our bodies then we won’t put it ON our bodies either. Therefore we only use and recommend plant based ingredients some of which we grow in our own medicinal herb garden. We will share with you our favourite plant based ingredients and tell you why we like them so much.

ORGANIC CALENDULA OIL

Calendula-week2 - Penny Lane OrganicsThis is one of our favourite plants and carrier oils.  Maybe we're a bit biased since we  grow Calendula in our medicinal herb garden and then make Calendula oil ourselves but Calendula is an extremely diverse plant revered for its healing and restorative properties. It  has been used for thousands of years by ancient civilizations  for a variety of conditions including muscle spasms and digestive problems but since it is anti-inflammatory, astringent and antimicrobial, Calendula is most commonly used to soothe skin irritation and it works great for treating skin sores and rashes and is even safe for the babies' delicate skin. In cosmetics it is used to help brighten dark circles, reduce puffiness, and soften fine lines and wrinkles. Calendula serums are especially suitable for very sensitive skin prone to inflammations, eczema, rosacea etc.

Calendula grows almost wild in our gardens and it's absolutely amazing to watch it grow and blossom, never knowing what colours will prevail from season to season. The colour of flowers will affect the colour of Calendula oil and of course the colour of the creams, lotions and serums made with it. In summer of 2013 almost all of our  Calendulas blossomed in deep orange, almost red colour giving our oils gorgeous deep orange tint (as pictured above). This is one oil I always have in my fridge and my medicine cabinet as a moisturizer and to sooth any burns or itchy skin. We also use it in our diaper rash creams Rough Skin Balms and of course in our Calendula Regenerating Serum.
